At the moment of writing this the sun is out, a perfect day for a trip with your classic car. I am even preparing to leave in a few hours for the Zoute Grand Prix, so there will be lots of classic cars on the road this weekend. Still, winter is coming… so maybe a good time to prepare the winter storage of your classic car.

Find a good place to store the car, beware of the bikes of the children and other stuff that is moved near the car. A good car cover is absolutely a good idea, make sure the material it is made of can ‘breathe’ so humidity is not sealed. Even open windows a bit so the interior is ventilated as well. Don’t use the handbrake but leave the car in first gear and make sure the fuel tank is full.

The ideal climate for your classic car is:

  • +/- 15° Celsius
  • - 40 to 50% humidity
  • Ventilation

A good cleaning, exterior and interior, before putting your classic in storage will do. Make sure the car is dry and had a good run, to prevent moist in the engine and exhaust.

Disconnect battery and use a battery conditioner to keep it in shape. If you happen to be in the storage, it is a good idea to start your car, move it back and forward, use the clutch and brakes to keep it in good working order.

If you put the car away for a longer period, give some extra attention to the tyres. Like said earlier, move your car back and forth from time to time. Another trick is to put some extra pressure (3,5 bar) on the tyres to prevent them from deforming. It won’t hurt doing both of course.

Another great idea is to use the winter season to prepare the next spring and summer drives by bringing your car to our workshop. We can do the maintenance, fix some issues and upgrade the car for you to enjoy even more in the future.
