Why we think you should buy a BMW 02
As ‘suppliers of driving pleasure’ we select our assortment of driver cars based on a broadly interpretable set of criteria that puts driving pleasure first.
Based on the Neue Klasse Sedans that BMW built between 1962 and 1972, the concept of the 02 was conceived. In 1966 they presented the 1600-2 (later named 1602) that, with its shorter chassis and lower weight, proved to be much nimbler then its predecessor. The 02 Series would prove to be a bullseye for the Bavarian brand. The sporty compact coupés added a lot to the brands image in terms of sportivity, quality and accessibility for everyday drivers.
The 02 series has gained a lot of traction over the passed years. Especially the first generation ones with the round taillights and metal grille with the small kidneys have a refinement that is translated in higher prices due to their presence. Once you are behind the wheel you get why this car was so popular. It steers very precisely and the 1.600cc engine is much more agile then you would think it is.
We believe the current rise in prices still undervaluates the value for money you get from a 02 in any variant. The 1602 was the first to come out and still is a very elegant appearance. As the buying guide of Classic World states; “Many champion the E30 3 Series as the driver’s choice of compact classic BMW, but those who’ve pressed on in an 02 say they feel far more modern than their years. Without electronic interference or much weight to haul around, these are fun cars to drive but need careful inspection and maintenance to keep it that way.
Given the roaring success of the 3 Series, it really is a mystery as to why the 02 isn’t more commonplace in the classic scene. Certainly, you’ll more likely see a 316i than a 1602 at the next show you visit.” We couldn’t agree more.
Why do we present you this 1602S?
As you know we have a weak spot for 02 series, and this 1602S is a special one. One of the reasons is that it is actually not assembled in Germany but in Kontich (BE) a way of working to avoid the protectionist import taxes that had to defend the local car builders. Another reason we were smitten with this car is the fact it already under went an extensive restoration (photos available) so it is actually ready to be enjoyed and further improved down the road. The owner that had commissioned the restoration lost interest along the way, selling the project to the garage owner who finished the restoration. However he never got the drive the car.
A last detail, that puts the cherry on the pie, is the factory original sunroof that works like a charm. We have driven 02s on romantic touring, rallyes, hillclimbs and least but not least ice cream runs loving every minute of it. But that sunroof would have enhanced the experience without a doubt.
